At Holt Farm Infants we are passionate about empowering all children in becoming confident and competent mathematicians who possess the necessary skills that will enable them to develop into adults who can utilise maths successfully in their everyday lives. We are also dedicated to making maths fun and thus helping children to foster a positive attitude towards the subject which will stand them in good stead for their future learning in the subject.

In Reception pupils have lots of opportunities to develop key mathematical skills through play based activities, for example couting out coins to buy items in the role-play shop. We also use the outside classroom as a tool to promote mathematical skills as the children do activities such as chalking numbers on the playground and throwing the correct number of bean bags into numbered buckets.

Year 1
In Year 1 we utilise lots of practical resources to help children understand mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, doubling and halving. As pupils become scure in a concept they are given opportunities to apply their knowledge to simple real-life problems. (For example, how many ways can we share out 10 play-dough cakes between two friends?)

Year 2
In Year 2 pupils are encouraged to apply their growing mathematical knowledge to solving a range of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and perservering in seeking solutions. A wide variety of practical resources are still used in Year 2 to help children in developing a deep understanding of different concepts including multiplication and division.
