Computing
At Holt Farm Infant, we embrace the digital age with enthusiasm and a commitment to providing our young learners with foundational computing skills. Our curriculum is designed to introduce primary age children to the basics of computing, including understanding how computers work and the importance of internet safety. We believe that an early familiarity with these concepts is crucial in setting the stage for future learning and responsible digital citizenship.
Our dedicated computing sessions involve interactive and engaging activities that not only teach the children how to use technology, but also encourage critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. From creating simple programs to learning about algorithms and data handling, our students receive a broad exposure to essential computing concepts. This ensures they are not only consumers of technology but also capable of understanding and creating with it.
We also prioritise the safety of our students online by integrating internet safety into our curriculum. Lessons on how to recognise safe websites, the importance of keeping personal information private, and the effects of screen time are all part of our comprehensive approach. By educating our students on these vital topics, we prepare them to navigate the digital world securely and confidently.

Holt Farm Infant School Computing Curriculum
At our school, we use the resource Purple Mash to deliver a structured and engaging computing education in line with the UK National Curriculum from Early Years through to Key Stage 1.
Our Curriculum is designed to ensure clear progression in skills and knowledge, with coverage across three key strands:
- Computer Science – Pupils learn how digital systems work, explore coding and programming concepts, and develop logical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Information Technology – Pupils use a variety of digital tools to create, organise, store, and present content for different purposes and audiences.
- Digital Literacy – Pupils are taught to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly, with a strong focus on online safety and understanding the role of technology in modern life.
Each unit includes practical, hands‑on activities that encourage creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. The curriculum is sequenced to build on prior learning, ensuring pupils develop both competence and confidence in using technology. By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils are beginning to develop their confidence with their computing skills in a range of contexts and are well placed to continue their digital learning in Keystage 2.
